Sue Katz
- The Bahamas
Sue Katz, a Boston native, is a visual artist who has been living and working in the Bahamas as an artist for over 35 years, where she continues to develop her distinctive artistic practice. She holds a BFA in illustration from Syracuse University School of Visual Arts and The Rhode Island School of Design.
Sue’s work goes beyond mere representation; she focuses on creating a mood through color, pattern, and composition. She is particularly drawn to the creative juxtaposition of bold tones and vivid color that might not traditionally harmonize, finding inspiration in the unexpected relationships between colors.
Retro imagery plays a central role in her practice, reflecting a nostalgic era of simplicity, while incorporating humor, a hint of kitsch, and subtle irony. By working with vintage materials, Sue experiments with her mid-century American childhood and explores her own memories.
Sue’s primary medium is analogue collage, cutting and assembling each piece by hand. Using old magazines, books and found imagery, she creates multi-layered compositions that explore themes of identity, human connection and references to pop art.
